Bay Area Crafty Stores

I took a detour from regular scheduled programming and spent a couple of days with my parents in the Bay Area (after a brutal meeting in Brisbane). I found a list of Bay Area Knits from http://ashascorner.blogdns.org/home/yarnstores.html

Saturaday - Elisabeth and CommunKNITY

I was in Los Gatos Saturaday visiting some friends and had brunch at a new outfit in Campbell. After a plesant meal, we headed to the Los Gatos. Los Gatos is a very cute town with your local shops (Bella Rosa) combined with quaint chain stores (Smith & Hawken), fancy restaurant (Chart House) ...

We found Elisabeth on the mezzaine level ... the first floor is a modern art gallery. Elisabth is a small (square footage) place with finished items, a small selection of fine yarn, fancy fabrics, a good size bookshelf ... It is described as a "Working Design Studio" ... My personal experience was not very pleasant. I found the set of Barabara G Walker books. There were quite a few other patrons making the purchase at the same time and the sales lady was overwhelmed and flustered. The price on the books were not marked. After a bunch of looking, she gave up and went searching for the shop owner. The shop owner didnt know and had to take more time to look it up. 10+ minutes later .she told me they are $34 each .. hrmph, they are $30 listed and Schoolhouse press will give you % off ... anyhoo.. I wont be going back. Glass needles, Lanternre moons, fine ribbons I can find somewhere else.

Next time I am near that neck of the woods, I will try Knitting Arts.

I took leave of my friends and went to CommuKNITy in San Jose. It is next to a gorgeous cafe I used to hang out in .. brings back the ol'daze. Anyways. The shop was having their White Sale, all cotton yarn 15% off. I am at a lost of words on how to describe the bizzillion colors and styles of Rowan and Debbie Bliss yarn. It was incredible. They also have the usual Manos, Regina, Cascade .. There are some outstanding Araucania (distributed by www.knittingfever.com) .. They also have more direct from Chile / Peru handspun handpainted .. yum. I also spent a good amount of time fondling Cascade Ecological Wool .. very chunky, very beautiful. I could not possbily remember all the different brands they carry! Fabulous store!

Time to head back to the East Bay. I was meeting more friends for dinner. We will try a new place - Red Kawali. It is Malaysian Street food.

Sunday - Stone Mountain .. (Knitting Basket, Lacis)

Since I missed Knitting Basket on Friday, My mom and I went on an adventure on Sunday to check it out. Hrmph, they are also closed on Sundays! Whoa! I pressed my face to the glass and they look like they have lots and lots and lots of goodies. Next time...

We head to Berkeley next - to our fav Stone Mountain fabrics. They have a gazillion buttons, silk, brocade, japanese, african, wool ..

I talked mom into going to Lacis. Hrmph, they are closed on Sundays too. bah!

I need to find J's link to the shops we went to when she visited....

Feather and Fan sock - report #1

August 12th... progress almost done with gusset

My first pair of socks

DSCN1115.jpg

Marathon knitting last night. I stayed up until 2a.m. and finished the gusset, foot, and toe.

A soak in the tub with the resident froggies.

A quick sqeeze and on to the blocker a.k.a. wire hangers.

Here is another view.

Thanks J for being a great enabler.

Feather and Fan sock - report #0

August 1 - I did not cast on another sock ...swatching doesn't count. :) J was having some issues with feather and fan and I was trying the pattern out.

Lorna's Lace Sheperd Sock in Mineshaft ...
size 1 CO 64st
split 32st, 16st, 16st on each needle

Knit 4 rows
Gather stitch 4 rows (I have personal bias against gather stitch, this way the top curls just a tiny bit.

Repeat pattern twice, switched to size 2. (I knit tight)
