In between the New Years ...

Good morning. I woke up to the sound of rain and instantly started thinking about the long to-do list. It is after the Roman New Year and Chinese New Year is coming up fast. It is a good time to take stock, look back, and forward.

Last year, with the time on my hands, I spent it on doing craft and learning new cooking technique and recipes. I stuck to my 'one for me, one for prez' on crafty projects. Each one of the prez will, eventually, find their way to their recipient. I started a project last week, using yarn I bought at Skeins Ltd closing sale - June 2005. This sparkley mohair, along with Garnstudio Drops Bomull/Lin, (along with some Rowan Calmer) may be my oldest stash yet. Too bad (or maybe it is good), that I can not sort by acquired date on Ravelry stash page. As for the food, well, I am still carrying that around!

So, I give myself a "B minus", for learning new techniques, crafting with existing stash, and not acquiring new.

Half way through last year, my crafty and cookery time returned to work time. The anxiety was replaced by general contentment of being employed. So the brain power has gone back to work and on getting my career back on track, I miss the crafty time a lot.

So, I give myself a "B", for staying focused, being efficient, and not squander my 'free' time.

Here to the New Year - continue to balance my time between crafting & relaxing, contemplating cute patterns Draped Cardigan from Vogue Knitting Winter 2010/11 & trying not to acquire stash, getting more chores done & staying sane.

Snow flurries break

No knitting around here. I am taking a break from Urban Aran, Patons' Street Smart Booklet. I have been making other things ... like... canelé, lemon bars , and marmalade.

I will return to knitting soon...
* edit, removed the link to Patons Street Smart booklet. The booklet is no longer available on their site.

Economics

me "another ball of yarn is leaving the house"
DH [ponders] "why are you selling all your yarn?"

"I am not selling all my yarn"
"huh, then what are you selling?"

"just a few"
"why did you buy them in the first place? this is where your economics break down, selling them at a loss"

"uh, yea. I know"

Collecting, stashing, hoarding ...

The other day, I was LOL at Yarn Harlot's saga .. on her washer / dryer / kitchen ...

"Stashing is just a clever financial insurance policy, and it's simply fiscally responsible to engage in it. "

These days, with our current financial situation, this topic is front of mind. I am feeling the satisfaction from FOs made with stash. I repeated her comment to DH, "Knitting is one of the few hobbies that people hoards materials". After a bit of brain storming, we came up with sewing as well. I couldn't think of any other ones. On the way home today, I used 'pet yarn' (vs 'working yarn') in conversation with GD. (I previously made a joke about that with J, ya know, I have Siberian Huskies working dog and she has Boris Pug pet dog and Ginger Boxer working dog). All this got me thinking, is there a line between collecting, stashing, and hoarding. And when, if ever, will I feel really fiscally responsible and enjoy my hobby at the same time :)

Marking time

Towards the end of last year, I set some goals to finish my wip crafty projects, as much as possible, without compromising the usual obligations. I managed to finish the two wip knitting projects - Dumpling (Ravelry link) and Hyrna Herborgar (Ravelry link) but failed to finish the sewing project that I 'started'.

Looking back, this was a pretty good crafty year. I didn't stash too much, I made a good variety, some prezs. I learned new techniques. I discovered I like short sleeve wool sweaters... funny that. Happy New Year!

Black clothes

DSCN0415.jpg

I am a bit obessive about my black clothes. Black is always "in" when you are looking in my closet. The last few years have been tough on black clothes. I occasionally stumble into Target and get my favorite Mossimo black random garment. Yesterday was one such occasion. I wore it yesterday and it is a keeper!

Really ...

Hrmph. This is the most flattering profile I've seen on Aquarians. AND ... it beats the profile on a Taurus. Ha.

Oh, don't mind these random entries, they are probably due to excessive self reflection and time on my hands and incoherent thought process and life-altering type events and and and ..
